Summer, in general, is a great time to slow down, relax and enjoy\nthe warm weather. And delicious food is usually not far behind. Whether it\u2019s\ngrilling out or picking fresh fruit and vegetables from the garden or local\nfarm, healthy options are abundant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the busy\nfall season begins, it is important to bring back or develop new, healthy\nhabits, and that includes eating enough fruits and vegetables. &nbsp;According\nto nutritionists at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.choosemyplate.gov\/WhatIsMyPlate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ChooseMyPlate.gov<\/a>, adult\nwomen should consume between 2 and 2.5 cups of vegetables per day and between\n1.5 and 2 cups of fruit per day. Men should consume between 2.5 and 3 cups of\nvegetables per day and about 2 cups of fruit per day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To meet those\nguidelines consider adding any of the following eight healthy, late-summer\nfruits and vegetables to your diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tomatoes:<\/strong> Big, red and juicy often\ndescribes ripe tomatoes in the summer. Full of water but low in carbs, tomatoes\nare known for their beta-carotene or vitamin A and vitamin C. Beta-carotene\nconverts to vitamin A and combats the effects of free radicals, improves cognitive\nfunction and may protect against common eye diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bell\nPeppers:<\/strong> The\nsummer harvest of bell peppers offers a variety of different tastes from the\nmost bitter, green bell peppers to the sweetest, red bell peppers. High in\nwater and fiber but low in calories, bell peppers offer a variety of health\nbenefits from a boost in immunity to improved eye health and heart health to a\ndecreased risk of anemia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tomatillos:<\/strong> Although tomatillos may\nappear to be small green tomatoes, they are closely related to South American\nCape gooseberries and are full of healthy boosting vitamins, minerals and\nantioxidants. Among its many benefits, tomatillos can reduce the chance of\ndiabetes, boost the immune system and reduce the risk of some cancers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summer\nSquash:<\/strong> Two\nof the most well-known summer squash are zucchini and yellow squash. Low in\ncarbs but high in water, they are a great source of Vitamin A, B6, and C,\nfolate, magnesium, fiber, riboflavin, phosphorus and potassium. These\nnutritional workhorses protect against heart and common eye diseases as well as\nboost immunity and bone strength.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Grapes:<\/strong> While grapes contain\nimportant nutrients for bone health and protect against certain bacteria,\nviruses and yeast infections, the skin of red grapes contain high amounts of\nanthocyanins, an antioxidant. Anthocyanins protect heart health, improve blood\nflow to brain, lower blood pressure and protect against damage caused by free\nradicals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/healthyvendingny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/resized2AdobeStock_201738971-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"healthy break room options in new york city\" class=\"wp-image-712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/healthyvendingny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/resized2AdobeStock_201738971-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/healthyvendingny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/resized2AdobeStock_201738971-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/healthyvendingny.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/resized2AdobeStock_201738971-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Peaches:<\/strong> Another delicious summer\nfruit, peaches provide good amounts of fiber as well as Vitamin A, C and\nnumerous minerals. A variety of antioxidants protect against cancerous cells,\nhelp prevent chronic health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and\nheart disease, and boost the immune system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Nectarines:<\/strong> Like peaches &#8211; high in\nfiber, low in calories and without the fuzz, nectarines also help improve\ndigestive health and resist obesity-related diabetes and heart disease.\nNectarines also offer numerous B vitamins which are important for the\nmetabolism of carbohydrates, protein and fat and in the formation of red blood\ncells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cantaloupe:<\/strong> Offering more beta carotene\nthan apricots, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, tangerines, nectarines and mangoes\nwith same amount of vitamin C as a small orange, cantaloupes help fight free\nradicals in the body as well as support hydration, eye health, the production\nof red blood cells and the immune system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Supporting employee consumption of healthy fruits and vegetables while at work helps support New York City employers too. <a href=\"http:\/\/healthyvendingny.com\/snacks.html\">Healthy employees<\/a> are more creative and productive and have fewer sick days.
